Biology on Tips: Genetics Lecture 3- How to make Gametes?. In order to attempt various calculation based questions in Genetics, first of all one should know how to form gametes from a given genotype and secondly, how to show cross and analyse its results.
1) How to form gametes?
- Gamete is the haploid state of diploid organism. it means that gametes contain only one set of chromosomes. They are formed by the process of Meiosis (a type of cell division in which the number of chromosomes reduces to half to that of parent cell, therefore meiosis is also called as "Reductional division". Gametes contain only one allele for a gene. So, I can say that gametes are pure for a character as they contain only one allele for a character.
- There is a small formula/trick to calculate the types of gametes for a particular genotype, i.e. 2n (two to the power n), where n = No. of heterozygous pairs.
- Next important thing is what are the types of gametes that will be formed from a particular genotype. So for that there is a very simple method i.e. Fork line method, that I have discussed in this video.
